Alamosa - The Hub of the San Luis Valley
The Base Camp For Two Historic Trains
With the new Rio Grande Scenic Railroad departing from right downtown, you can travel over spectacular LaVeta Pass, or you can travel south for a connection with the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad.
The LaVeta Pass route takes you over one of the highest rail passes in the country. The scenery is spectacular as you travel steep grades, winding curves and through two tunnels. The train stops in the quaint mountain town of LaVeta for lunch and a chance to browse galleries or tour the history museum.
The connection to the Cumbres & Toltec gives you an opportunity to experience the only place in North America where standard gauge passenger rail meets narrow gauge passenger rail. This is an exciting trip for the railroad buffs aboard two trains in one day!
The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad has added luxury dome cars to their line-up of passenger equipment. Two steam engines have also been added, so the train will be pulled by these historic machines seven days a week this year.
When you plan your visit to Alamosa, you don't want to miss the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. This miracle of nature will leave you awestruck with its majesty and wonder. The visitor's center at the Dunes is almost as much fun as the Dunes themselves. People travel from all over the world to visit this unique park. Great lodging and dining await you in Alamosa, your base camp. You can plan your trip today at www.alamosa.org.
