Colorado Travel Planning Guides : All Aboard : My Wise Old Woman of the West

My Wise Old Woman of the West

The historical character of the Durango & Silverton train came to life within me as I toured up the scenic San Juan Mountains in Colorado. I sensed her personality as I felt her rhythm, heard her whistle blowing and the chugging sound of her engine. She seemed like a wise old woman of the West climbing up and up the mountain, pulling her cargo of trusting passengers behind her.

I laughed with excitement as she puffed out steam, showering my cheeks. She continued to chug on, whistle blowing, puffing, and tirelessly climbing. We came to a clearing at 7,200 feet above sea level with a heavenly view of the river below us. Quietness settled among the passengers. Maybe the rhythm of the train and the natural beauty before their eyes had put a spell on them that reached deep down into their hearts and souls.

The town of Silverton came into view. She started running at a slow pace, letting us absorb the idea of a trip ending and a chance to say good-bye to her. I heard her whistle blow saying her farewell. My heart answered back, "Thank you my friend, for the opportunity to have known you, to feel your spirit, and share in the beauty that surrounds you. I will remember you always as a wise old woman of the West and, although aged, very capable of bringing happiness to many."
