Leadville and Twin Lakes are mountain communities whose people treasure their quality of life. Leadville stands at 10,152 feet above sea level, with views of two of the highest peaks in the state, Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive. Over 75% of Lake County is public land, which makes for great hiking, biking and skiing. Everywhere you look there's a new valley to explore.
Downtown Leadville is a National Historic Landmark District with over 70 square blocks of buildings built between 1880 and 1905. The unincorporated village of Twin Lakes is located on the southern part of the county and is also a National Historic Site, a haven for those who love fishing and boating with incredible vistas.
All major highways in Lake County have been designated by the State of Colorado and the US Department of Transportation as the Top of Rockies National Scenic and Historic Byway. Highway 24 North is also the Tenth Mountain Division Memorial Highway.
There are interpretive signs at the entrance to Ski Cooper and Camp Hale. All highways are easily accessible year round and are in close proximity to six major ski areas. Vail and Breckenridge are 45 minutes away, Denver and Colorado Springs just two hours away, served by major airports.
The average number of days of sunshine is 310. Average snowfall annually is 200+ inches with snow on the ground from the end of October to mid May. A typical summer day is sunny, highs in the 70s with evening temperatures in the 40s. The humidity is low. Summer afternoon showers are brief. A typical winter day is sunny with highs in the mid 30s and lows in the single digits.
The population according to the 2000 census is 7812 in Lake County and 2821 in Leadville.
