First laid out in 1961, the Lake County Airport in Leadville, Colorado is North America's highest public use airport. This distinction is very important due to the fact that the performance of an aircraft (namely its ability to take off and climb) deteriorates with an increase in altitude. In fact, many aircraft are operating above their manufacturer's recommended specifications when flying into and out of Leadville.

McGinnis Cottage Bed & Breakfast Inn, located on historic "Banker's Row" was built by the famous architect Herbert C. Dimick, noted by historians as one of the country's great Victorian architects of the time. It should be noted that the designation of "Banker's Row" was not because bankers built and resided in these homes, but because the homes were constructed so well for the time that only wealthy home buyers could afford the homes, hence the reference to "bankers". It is believed that John A. Ewing contracted with Dimick to build this and other adjacent houses on "Banker' Row" around 1897 using many of the original timbers from the Leadville Ice Palace.
