Royal Gorge Bridge & Park
Welcome to Royal Gorge Country!
From Model T's to the SUV's, the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park blends its rich history with new thrills and world class Colorado scenery to remain one of Colorado's most popular attractions.
The Royal Gorge Bridge built in 1929 is still toted as an engineering marvel even by today's standards. From the deck of the world's highest suspension bridge, and special lookout points around the park, guests are treated to a 360 degree view of blue sky, mountains, and the 1,000 foot reddish granite walls of the Royal Gorge.
Visitors for decades have enjoyed walking or driving across the wooden-planked bridge suspended a 1,053 feet above the Arkansas River, spanning a quarter mile between granite arches. Since 2002, the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park has added over 14 new attractions or amenities to enhance the historic setting and family adventure package. The most recent addition, the Royal Rush Skycoaster, is known as the world's scariest skycoaster. It sits on the very edge of the Royal Gorge, hoists guests up a 100 foot tower and let's them "swing" out over the side. Guests from the bridge often hear screams of delight-or fright!
Also, considered an engineering feat is the World's Steepest Incline Railway, built in 1931. The Incline Railway glides down 1,550 feet at a 45-degree angle between magnificent granite formations to the rushing Arkansas River below. Visitor's also enjoy the World's Longest Single-span Aerial Tram, traversing 2,220 feet across the Royal Gorge.
Among other attractions is The Wapiti Western Wildlife Park. It winds through nature paths starring Colorado Elk, Bighorn Sheep and White Buffalo. The Petting Zoo nestled in with the Colorado Spruce and Cedars, houses small barnyard animals, and features burro rides for small children. A Mountain Man Encampment, celebrating the past western lifestyle, features a matched draft mule team and wagon rides, complete with authentic muleskinners.
Royal Gorge Bridge and Park is open year around so guests can enjoy all seasons in this spectacular area. The park is fully operational with all attractions and special features open beginning May 1. Special weekend events are planned throughout the summer and fall from a Civil War Re-enactment to the extreme sport event of BASE jumping where athlete's jump from the Bridge with special parachutes landing at the base of the river. The park also has the Bighorn Mountaintop Lodge, perched where guests are treated to a fabulous view. The Bighorn Mountaintop lodge sleeps up to eight family members, and is often used for small weddings, business meetings, dinners, and luncheons. Juniper Junction is another area often rented for outdoor weddings, reunions, and corporate picnics.
