Crested Butte/Gunnison - Gunnison Growler Weekend May 26-28, 2012 - Gunnison Kicking off the summer season is Gunnison Growler Weekend, featuring three days of biking events, trail running races, a kids' fishing and outdoor sports derby, and outdoor sports expo for the whole family to celebrate Memorial Day weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, Gunnison's IOOF Park and one block of Virginia Avenue between Main Street and Iowa Street, will be filled with food vendors, live music and a beer garden for racers and the public to enjoy. This downtown area also will be the start and finishes for the Half-Growler (32 miles) and Full-Growler (64 miles) races and Growler Gran Fondo ride from Gunnison to Mt. Crested and back (64 miles). The other centers of activities will be Hartman Rocks Multi-Use Recreation Area and Jorgensen Park. The 25k and 50k Sage Burner trail running events start and finish and Hartman Rocks. The Vail Lacrosse Shootout Tournament is by most accounts, the most prestigious annual Club Lacrosse tournament in the world. This year promises to be one of the top lacrosse tournaments of 2011. Past years have seen the United States national team and the Canadian national team enter the tournament (1994). In 1993, the Canadian East and West invitational squads competed in the tournament, and held a quiet intersquad game on the last day of the tournament to help determine the final roster for the 1994 Canadian national team. The English national team competed in Vail in 1992, and for the last 10 years, the top teams from the United States Club Lacrosse Association have brought teams to the Vail Lacrosse Shootout Tournament. The weekend includes a colorful Independence Day Celebration on July 4. A 10K trail race fires up Independence Day morning, and the "Firecracker 50" bike race kicks off the Main Street parade
followed by various activities and music throughout town. End the night with the National Repertory Orchestra as they perform a FREE mountain holiday celebration followed by an extraordinary fireworks display (weather permitting).

In 1915 Penrose finished converting the narrow carriage road to the summit of the 14,110-foot mountain into the Pikes Peak Highway. In order to publicize his adopted hometown and his new road, he devised a simple plan - run an automobile race to the summit of Pikes Peak on the new highway. The first Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb was held August 10- 12, 1916.

Pumpkin Pie Days Antique Show, October 13 and 14, Pumpkin Pie Days was a community festival held in Longmont each year between 1899 and 1914. Visitors came to town, many on the special trains the railroad added for the occasion, to watch the parade, cheer at the horse races, and, of course, partake of the free pumpkin pie and other food provided by Longmont businesses and housewives. Some years, attendance was more than 10,000.. In 1969, the St. Vrain Historical Society chose to commemorate this early community celebration in the name of their newly established flea market and antique show.
