DURANGO HERITAGE CELEBRATION

Historic Fun in the Four Corners

- by SuzanneParker

Durnago Heritage Celebration
For those who have always wanted to visit Durango, Colorado to ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge train, or if experiencing this Four Corners mountain resort town is a pleasure to be relived, here's the best opportunity to come along in recent history! From October 9-12, 2008 a celebration of the area's historic beginnings will be held.

The Durango Heritage Celebration is an event to highlight the town's colorful and diverse past, focusing on Durango's incorporation in 1881 to 1910. The purpose of the event is to benefit the community, educate those in attendance and, of course, bring joy to all who participate. It is sponsored by the City of Durango, the Durango Business Improvement District and a number of generous private sponsors, credited on the event's Web site: www.durangoheritagecelebration.org.

A varietyof history related and entertaining activities will be offered in the downtown area, from the train depot at one end of Main Avenue to the Power House, the oldest remaining alternating steam power plant in the world, built in 1893, a few blocks to the north.

Durnago Heritage CelebrationThis event will be filled with such diverse activities as historic walking tours and a tour of one of Durango's cemeteries to see and hear early pioneers interred there come alive through re-enactment, to a Grand Victorian Ball in the tradition of the 1880s. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy an 1880's Banquet of the Governors at the historic Strater Hotel, listen to a barbershop concert while enjoying ice cream, take promenade with other "Victorians" down Durango's most historic residential boulevard, learn about vintage guns or attend a "Then and Now" fashion show, experience a re-enactment of old Fort Lewis by authentically dressed soldiers, and several other varied activities and museum exhibits related to Durango's heritage.

Although dressing in period Victorian or Old West costume is not required for most activities, it is bound to add to the enjoyment of the event. Interested parties should keep in mind that dressing in period attire is required to board the Durango Heritage train on Oct. 11, and is requested for the ball and banquet. In fact, it's encouraged for all the activities, both for the fun of those in costume and for adding to the overall ambiance of this historic event.
