COLORADO SKI & SNOWBOARD MUSEUM AND HALL OF FAME
The Colorado Ski & Snowboard Museum, located in the Vail Village, recently unveiled its newest exhibit: Vail-Dream Realized.
The Museum highlighted Vail's almost 50 years of history following the requests of thousands of annual visitors to the Museum. The museum-goers were curious about the pioneers of Vail, the growth of the community and wanted additional information regarding the history of the Vail Valley.
The new exhibit, Vail-Dream Realized takes visitors through Vail's history from the development of the Vail Valley to the emergence of Vail becoming one of Colorado's premier ski destination resorts. Unique interactive elements, historic photos and posters as well as ski memorabilia and artifacts share "the story of Vail." in this new exhibit. The Characters of Vail-an ever changing portion of the exhibit will recognize, over time, many of the individuals who have established their mark on Vail. As our community's rich history continues to develop in years to come, this exhibit will record, honor and share Vail's legacy.
Beginning with the Ute Indians, the exhibit chronicles the Vail Valley's many historical visitors and residents. The Irish nobleman, Lord George Gore passed through this area lending his name to our mountain range. Charles Vail, an honored highway engineer unknowingly became the valley's namesake and the Tenth Mountain Division, who trained during World War II at Camp Hale, 15 miles down the road, molded the ski industry in Colorado for years to come. Vail's finder and founder, Earl Eaton and Pete Seibert changed the face of the Valley forever and brought the dream of Vail, with its opening in December 1962, to its current status as a word class ski destination.
New interactive elements bring the history of Vail to life. The film, Wilderness to World Class produced by filmmaker, Roger Brown for Vail's 25th anniversary, shares Vail's rise and growth as a ski community. Unique soundboards allow guests to learn about Vail's famous ski runs and to hear first-hand from Vail pioneers and Hall members as they share their personal memories of Vail in audio clips. Engaging moving blocks invite guests to match up different decades of skiing history that have taken place since Vail's opening in 1962.
