5 Amazing Free Colorado Adventures

Hello, I’m Michael Wigge, helping you explore free Colorado. I’m a travel writer who has faced several adventure challenges over the years. My trip from Germany to Antarctica was entitled “How to Travel the World for Free,” and it got me invited to be on The Tonight Show with Katy Perry. Afterward, I received an offer to immigrate to the US. I arrived in the U.S. from Germany ten years ago and since then, I’ve enjoyed exploring the vibrant state of Colorado and calling it my home. 2nd - Free Colorado Ghost Town Tour

Colorado is rich in history, particularly from the Gold Rush era, and exploring its ghost towns is a fascinating way to delve into the past. Many of these abandoned towns are open to the public and free to visit. I spent some time in Chaffee County, living in the picturesque town of Salida, Colorado. During my stay, I discovered charming, almost forgotten mountain towns in the surrounding peaks. My favorite among them is:

Free Colorado Ghost Town

St. Elmo

One of the most accessible and well-preserved ghost towns is St. Elmo. Located in Chaffee County, this former mining town offers a glimpse into Colorado’s mining history with its intact, century-old buildings and structures.

  • Buckskin Joe: Near Buena Vista, this ghost town provides a look at frontier life with several original buildings still standing.
  • Once known as Bonanza City, Bonanza, CO is largely abandoned, with just a few full-time residents in the surrounding hills northwest of Villa Grove. Despite this, several historic buildings remain, making the 25-minute detour from Villa Grove worthwhile.
