It’s About TIME
February 8, 2025 @ 11:00 am - May 24, 2025 @ 5:00 pm
The notion of time affects everything from daily life to the study of disciplines like science and philosophy. Explore the theories and portrayals of past, present, and future as It’s About TIME opens Feb. 7 and runs through May 24 at the Global Village Museum of Arts and Cultures. “Time is a fascinating global concept,” said Seraina Gessler, one of the curators of the Main Gallery exhibit. “From the candle and pendulum clocks to the sundial and Swedish Mora clock, Father Time has been analyzed and visualized throughout the centuries in many different ways.” The exhibition will showcase the evolution of time-measuring devices, such as the 1730 invention of the chronometer – or mechanical clock – for determining a ship’s longitude on the high seas. Different calendar systems will be highlighted, including the Cosmic Calendar which squeezes the 13.8-billion-year history of the universe into a single year. The ancient Greeks had the concepts of Chronos and Kairos, and today’s military uses Zulu time for aviation purposes. “Time – and its history and development – are whole worlds to be discovered,” Gessler said. “Einstein had the realization that time is not absolute. And Charles Darwin said that a man who dares to waste one hour of life has not discovered the value of life. Time is so much more than the reading of a clock. So take some time out, and come experience the exhibit.” The Global Village Museum is located at 200 West Mountain Avenue, and Museum hours are 11 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday.
