A Family Adventure Day at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park
There are family outings—and then there are family adventures, and our trip to the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park in Colorado definitely fell into the latter category. Nestled near Cañon City and suspended 956 feet above the Arkansas River, the Royal Gorge Bridge isn’t just a feat of engineering—it’s a place that turns a simple day trip into an unforgettable memory.
The Arrival: First Glimpses and Goosebumps
As we wound our way through the mountain roads, anticipation buzzed in the car. The kids—Emma, 10, and Jake, 7—pressed their faces to the windows, trying to be the first to spot the famous suspension bridge. When we finally pulled into the park’s entrance, the view didn’t disappoint. Towering cliffs dropped steeply into the gorge below, and stretching between them was the awe-inspiring Royal Gorge Bridge—America’s highest suspension bridge.
The kids practically dragged us from the parking lot, wide-eyed and giddy. “We’re really going to walk across that?” Jake asked, eyes wide with a mix of fear and excitement. We laughed, reassuring him that yes, we were all going across—and that it was perfectly safe (even if our knees might wobble a bit).
Walking the Bridge: Heartbeats and High Views
Stepping onto the bridge was like stepping into another world. The wooden planks creaked beneath our feet, and the breeze tugged gently at our jackets. The view down—nearly 1,000 feet straight to the river—was both dizzying and breathtaking.
Emma, our little photographer, paused every few feet to take pictures, while Jake clung to the railing, daring himself to peek down. The panorama stretched endlessly: pine-covered cliffs, the silvery ribbon of river, and the occasional train crawling along the canyon floor. It felt like standing on the edge of the earth.
Family Adventures Galore: Rides, Shows, and Soaring Fun
Gondola Ride
After conquering the bridge, we headed to the gondola ride. Gliding across the gorge in the bright red aerial tram was nothing short of magical. The kids were amazed at how small the bridge looked from above, and we all snapped a dozen more photos.
Tommy Knocker Playland
Next came the Tommy Knocker Playland, where the kids raced through ropes and slides while we sat nearby enjoying a cold lemonade. Then, for something completely different, we caught a live Birds of Prey Show by Nature’s Educators in the Plaza Theater. It was a thrilling show, and we learned a lot about birds of prey.
The Skycoaster
And of course, we had to try the Skycoaster—well, some of us. Emma and I opted to stay on the ground while my husband, adrenaline junkie that he is, went soaring out over the canyon, screaming with laughter.
Lunch with a View
Lunch at the Bridge View BBQ was exactly what we needed—good food and an even better backdrop. There’s something about biting into a pulled pork sandwich while watching hawks soar over a 1,200-foot canyon that makes you appreciate life a little more.
A Perfect Family Adventure Day Full of Fun and Memories
By the end of the day, we were sun-kissed, slightly tired, and full of stories to tell. The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park had something for each of us—thrills for the daredevils, play areas for the little ones, and breathtaking scenery that impressed even the hard-to-please adults.
