The Georgetown Loop ~ Colorado Zephyr Tour ~ Royal Gorge Route

Georgetown Loop Train

The Georgetown Loop Adventure Train Tours

The historic Georgetown Loop Railroad tour is Alpenglow’s most popular adventure tour. The authentic narrow garage train tour is full of boomtown silver rush history from the 1880s. Back when the narrow gauge train freighted tons of mineral-rich ores down to the smelters of Denver.

Devil’s Gate Train Station

The Georgetown Loop begins and ends at Devil’s Gate Train Station. The Alpenglow drivers will get you started with a free water bottle and sunscreen just before boarding the train. The Georgetown Loop Train is an open-air railcar train that provides the best opportunity for taking pictures. Some cars are roofed, but you choose.

The views along the way are spectacular as you cross the thunderous waters of Clear Creek eight times! Descending from the top of the Continental Divide to the majestic waterfalls beneath the High Bridge is what inspired treasure seekers to “go west, young man, go west.”

Take a tour with a knowledgeable guide at the Lebanon silver mine; you might even find a silver nugget. Re-board the train and prepare for incredible views from the 95-foot-high trestle bridge! Listen to the train whistle echo bounce off the mountain walls.

Back to the Devil’s Gaten Station

When the “iron horse” returns to Devil’s Gate station, more adventure awaits. First, your tour guide will take you to Georgetown Park for a delicious lunchtime interlude in the Victorian Gazebo. Reconnect to the memorable time when the noon-time pace was a bit less hectic, and the art of picnicking was a treasured life experience. Enjoy the elaborate playground while the all-you-can-eat lunch unfolds in the Rocky Mountain sunshine.

Historic Georgetown

After getting a belly full, your driver will perform an impromptu magic show with some of the youngest guests as the magician’s apprentice. Next, we take our guests to Historic Georgetown, where we stroll through all the old-time curio shops on the frontier promenade.

  • Alpenglow Tours provides variations of the Georgetown Loop, such as 4 and 6-hour tours.
  • Free photos and videos are also available.

Royal Gorge Route Railroad

The Royal Gorge Adventure Train Tour

If you have 12 hours for the deluxe Royal Gorge Adventure Tour, it’s well worth it; however, there are options. The tour begins with a luxury van pickup at your lodging. On route to Cañon City the van will cross Hoosier Pass at 11,541’, where three fourteeners can be seen: Mt. Lincoln, Mt. Democrat, and Mt. Bross—a great photo opportunity. As the van continues, it will ascend Skyline Drive, built by convicts in the 1930s, which is not only famous for spectacular views but also its prehistoric dinosaur footprints and other fossils.

All Aboard at Cañon City

Your tour has been planned with just the right amount of time to enjoy a real picnic spread on the riverbank of the Arkansas River. Once satisfied, it’s time to jump back on the train. Next, you can begin relaxing in the air-conditioned coaches or embrace the wilderness in the “open-air” cars. Your conductor will share some fascinating history about the original exploration by Lt. Zebulon Pike, and tales from the frontier battles during the infamous Royal Gorge Railroad War.

The Royal Gorge Bridge

The train tour takes you over 12 miles up the old Denver, Rio Grande, and Western rail lines and back again. The entire train tour is through the Royal Gorge or otherwise known as the “Grand Canyon of the Arkansas.” The highest part of the Canyon is over 1,000’ and provides stunning views of the Royal Gorge Bridge as the train passes underneath. The suspension bridge, built in 1929, is the longest in NA and will undoubtedly be a focal point of the tour later.

Whinery Tour

Next, your adventure tour guide will take you to the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey. Hosted in a beautiful ancient monastery, they invite you to enjoy some complimentary Colorado vintages. While the adults are sipping, the kids are entertained by the tour guide’s up-close magic tricks, complete with prizes!

Stop at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park

Choose to walk across the Royal Gorge Bridge or ride the Royal Gorge Chasm across the gorge; in either case, you will experience spectacular views. The Royal Gorge Chasm is a 35-passenger aerial tram that spans the Royal Gorge and reaches more than 1,200 feet above the Arkansas River.

Visitors of all ages will enjoy various entertainment throughout the park, from multi-media historical presentations at the Plaza Theatre to the performances at the Gazebo. Kids can enjoy the petting zoo, full of small barnyard animals. Large game animals are also housed at the park for observation.

Royal Gorge Theme Park Included

The Alpenglow Adventures Tours fare covers all the attractions at the park (food, beverages, zipline, and Canyon Swing are not included). You have a choice of what you’d like to do… or just relax and take in the sunshine. It will be an unforgettable afternoon.

Relax and Enjoy the Ride Back Home

After a long day, it’s time to sit back while the van takes you to your lodging. There are options for adventure train tours that might skip the Winery tour or the amusement park. A variation of the tour can be done in 8-hours.
