Preparation

Get a lightweight backpack to carry essentials: water, food, a backup charger for your smartphone, a blanket, and a flashlight. Protect yourself and your children from the elements with sunscreen and insect repellant. If you will be in an area with bears, keep a can of bear spray handy.

Dress in layers. Nothing makes hikers, especially children new to the hobby, quite as cranky as being too cold or hot. Hiking shoes are ideal, but they are not always necessary. Any shoes with good tread and decent cushion will do for most trails. Prevent blisters by bringing extra socks in case yours gets wet. Keep an extra pair of shoes in the car to change into after the hike. Hot days, steep climbs, and stream crossings take their toll on your feet; you will appreciate the relief a change of footwear can provide.
