Tour of the Night Sky at Chimney Rock National Monument

What to Expect at the Tour of the Night Sky

On Saturday, August 30th, an evening program, "Tour of the Night Sky," will be offered, allowing visitors to view stars, planets, and a partially illuminated moon through telescopes, all from the same dark-sky location used by ancient Puebloan astronomers.

The Event Includes:

  • A speaker-led introduction highlighting how the ancient Puebloans observed and interpreted the sky.
  • A naked-eye tour of constellations and celestial objects.
  • Telescope viewing of featured objects.
  • Short educational talks covering star life cycles, galaxy types, and new discoveries (like those from the James Webb Space Telescope)

Visitor Tips

  • Dress warmly and bring gear (jackets, blankets, red‑lens flashlight, binoculars).
  • Arrive before the check‑in window ends—late arrivals cannot be accommodated.
