SUMMARY:RAW\, CONCRETE
DESCRIPTION:Cottonwood Center for the Arts is pleased to announce a juried exhibition for the month of February featuring works in response to an open call to the public: RAW\, CONCRETE \nThe Brutalist Movement of the 1950s-1980s got its name in part from the French phrase béton brut—”raw concrete”. It inspired artists and architects to create works that solved societal ills: income inequality\, housing and food shortages\, and political instability in the wake of two world wars. \nTheir achievements still sing through the decades in the forms of public housing design\, modular furniture\, and bold\, legible typefaces. Adornment was eschewed\, but beauty was not…the woodgrain texture of plywood formwork is still visibly embedded in concrete surfaces\, rust is allowed to express its nature\, glass is not just a window but a portal uniting inside and outside\, and paint is applied with no intention of illusion. \nFebruary’s call invited artists to create works influenced by Brutalism\, showing us pure materials\, utility and economy\, and a message—either literal or implied—that what the world needs now is authenticity\, raw and concrete. \nCome experience this exhibit and enjoy two floors of open studios + galleries this First Friday from 5-8 pm\, and all month during normal business hours.

SUMMARY:Mud and Modernity in Japanese Art
DESCRIPTION:The art historian Bert Winther-Tamaki describes the Japanese term tsuchi\, literally “soil” or “earth\,” as something beyond geology: it is a concept that expresses a wholly unique way of understanding and manipulating one’s natural environment. Clay and earth have been central to Japanese visual and material culture since time immemorial—Japan is the home of ceramics that some scholars estimate date to as early as 14\,000 BCE\, as well as pioneering experiments in contemporary art which saw artists getting up close and personal with raw earth. This talk will trace the role played by clay\, mud\, and tsuchi in shaping the aesthetics of Japan’s modern era—a moment in which both cutting-edge modernity and deep-seated artistic tradition were equally critical. \nSam Hensley (he/him) is Curator of Collections and Exhibitions at the Global Village Museum\, where he facilitates exhibitions and programs celebrating the interconnectedness of global visual culture. His research focuses on Japanese art and craft at moments of political and cultural transition\, exploring the role of artmaking in tempering times of personal and social upheaval. Sam holds an MA in East Asian Art History and Critical Museology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a BA in Pre-Columbian Art History and Japanese Studies from West Virginia University.

SUMMARY:2026: Sparky LeBold\, a Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:Cottonwood Center for the Arts is pleased to announce a retrospective exhibition for the month of January featuring works by Sparky LeBold. \nAbout the Artist: \nLeBold has made a name for himself both in America and abroad over the course of his stellar career. Since graduating from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena\, California (1986)\, he has been inducted into Who’s Who in American Art (2002)\, has held fifteen One-Man Shows across America and in Europe\, and recognized as a National Artist of Portugal\, where townspeople of Sesimbra have lovingly nicknamed him “Picasso Americano”. \nLeBold’s oil paintings are inspired by the beauty he has experienced while traveling all over the world. His ability to translate what we see in nature onto canvases large and small has resonated with corporate and private collectors for the past 41 years and captured the attention of The Artist’s Magazine when they listed him as “one of the top 50 landscape painters in America”. \nLeBold’s work is full of emotion and spirit\, reflecting his desire to communicate and raise awareness for the beauty in nature that we may overlook. His images hold your attention\, touch your soul and leave an imprint that lingers. Not to mention\, he has a sweet ponytail. \nThis is who I am…as honest as I can be. I consider this to be the most important Show of my career…a prelude of where I have traveled and a lighted tunnel to where I am trying to land. This Show is about giving what I have without exception and hoping to find an audience to accept it; and if not\, I lay my worth in God’s embrace to be considered…no less\, no more than what I can give from my heart soul…Muito Obrigado e beijinhas meu amigos…ate a logo…sparky \n  \nCome experience this exhibit and enjoy two floors of open studios + galleries this First Friday from 5-8 pm\, and all month during normal business hours.
