SUMMARY:SYML
DESCRIPTION:Recommended if you like: Noah Cyrus\, Gregory Alan Isakov\, Richy Mitch & Coal Miners\, Hozier\, Daughter\, Patrick Watson\, Novo Amor\, Lord Huron SYML is the solo venture of Seattle artist Brian Fennell. Welsh for “simple”— he makes music that taps into the instincts that drive us to places of sanctuary\, whether that be a place or a person. Fennell’s latest offering\, Nobody Lives Here\, marks his clearest\, crispest writing. Written\, recorded\, and produced by him and his longtime collaborator Brian Eichelberger\, it is fueled by the keen understanding that life is a contradiction\, a fleeting moment. But as we accept the presence of loss\, we can still welcome others into our space with melody\, lyrics\, a slide guitar\, or a cello’s hum. His sense of humanity is his musical compass. As an artist\, Fennell takes license to both gut and be gutted. “If the dark inspires the good\, that’s a good thing to be honest about\,” he says. He released his self-titled debut album in 2019\, which includes the multi platinum song “Where’s My Love” and the Gold Record fan favorite “Girl.” His 2023 sophomore album\, The Day My Father Died\, described by NPR as “euphoric\,” was recorded at Studio X with renowned producer Phil Ek and features collaborations with Elbow’s Guy Garvey\, Lucius\, Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek\, and Charlotte Lawrence. His music has become the soundtrack to countless films and TV shows and was used by Lana Del Rey on the song “Paris\, TX\,” from her Grammy-nominated 2023 album. With over four billion streams\, the multi-platinum artist looks at grief\, loss\, mortality\, and the passing of time directly in the eye\, unwavering and harmonious. In 2024\, SYML launched the imprint\, FIN. Recordings\, a collaboration with his label\, Nettwerk Music Group\, and management Good Harbor Music

SUMMARY:The Jayhawks + James McMurtry
DESCRIPTION:Recommended if you like: Son volt\, Billy Bragg\, John Hiatt\, Nick Lowe\, Josh Ritter\, Wilco\, Justin Townes Earle\, Drive-By Truckers\, Todd Snider\, Jason Isbell \nThe Jayhawks: 40th Anniversary! Over the course of 4 decades and countless memorable live shows\, The Jayhawks have soared to heights few ever achieve while winning the hearts and minds of numerous critics\, fans and peers in the process. Since 2014 The Jayhawks have enjoyed a career resurgence\, touring constantly and releasing 3 memorable albums – including Paging Mr. Proust\, a true classic co-produced by Peter Buck – while collaborating with the likes of Ray Davies and Wesley Stace. In early 2025 the band announced the that work had begun on their 12th studio album\, slated to come out in 2026\, which will be the 40th anniversary of the release of their first album. 2026 has officially been designated as “The Year Of The Hawk.” \nJames McMurtry released The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy on June 20th via New West Records. The 10-song collection was co-produced by McMurtry & Don Dixon (R.E.M.\, The Smithereens) and is his first album in four years. It follows his 2021 acclaimed new West debut\, The Horses and the Hounds\, which UnCut Magazine said “lifts storytelling-in-song to meticulous new levels” and Pitchfork awarded an 8.0\, saying “James McMurtry stands out even among the Lone Star State’s finest songwriters…” The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy features appearances by Sarah Jarosz\, Charlie Sexton\, Bonnie Whitmore\, Bukka Allen and more\, alongside his trusted backing band\, THE MARTIAL LAW REVIEW\, Tim Holt on guitar and accordion\, Cornbread on bass and Daren Hess on drums. \nAs varied as they are\, McMurtry’s new story-songs find inspiration in scraps from his family’s past: a rough pencil sketch by Ken Kesey that serves as the album cover\, the hallucinations experienced by his father\, the legendary writer Larry McMurtry\, an old poem by a family friend. A supremely insightful and inventive storyteller\, McMurtry teases vivid worlds out of small details\, setting them to arrangements that have elements of Americana but sound too sly and smart for such a general category. Funny and sad often in the same breath\, The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy adds a new chapter to a long career that has young songwriters like Sarah Jarosz and Jason Isbell cite him as a formative influence.

SUMMARY:AUG 11 – What Is Art\, Really? Lessons from East and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Tues\, Aug 11\, 6:00 – 7:00 PM \nDoors Open at 5:30 PM. \nAdmission $10 \nRefreshments and light snacks provided. \nWe often assume that “art” exists in every culture in the same way it does in ours — but does it? \nThis engaging presentation challenges that assumption. For a member of a nomadic tribe\, for example\, artistic expression may be woven into daily life rather than displayed on a wall\, so what does “making art” actually look like when your lifestyle allows for few possessions?\nIs art an integral part of being human\, or a culturally specific concept? How do form and function differ from what we assume in the Western world? \nDrawing on specific examples from East Africa and West Africa\, this presentation reveals how two regions of a vast and diverse continent approach artistic tradition in strikingly different ways. \nAudience participation\, thoughtful challenges\, and lively discussion are encouraged throughout. Expect to leave with a broadened perspective on what “art” really means! \nDr. Lydia Dambekalns holds a Ph.D. from Penn State University and spent 25 years as an Associate Professor of Art Education at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. A specialist in fiber arts\, she has presented and led workshops extensively at national and regional conferences throughout her career. \nDambekalns’ global perspective is rooted in firsthand experience: she served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Kenya during the 1980s and in Benin in the 2000s\, and has lived and worked across Africa\, Asia\, and Europe; including a Fulbright Fellowship in Latvia (2004–2005). \nThis presentation is offered in partnership with the Fort Collins International Center.

SUMMARY:Toad the Wet Sprocket\, with Augustana
DESCRIPTION:Any music fan who grew up in the ‘90s\, before the rise of streaming platforms\, will tell you that when a record store clerk made a music recommendation\, you took it seriously. Often\, well-studied music nerds\, these unsung tastemakers had their finger on the pulse of lesser-known\, excellent bands. So it speaks volumes that many of Toad the Wet Sprocket’s earliest champions were record store clerks who put the Santa Barbara quartet’s early albums into unsuspecting listeners’ hands\, convincing them to overlook their unusual band name and give them a shot\, perhaps comparing them to R.E.M. \nThese four friends who met in a high school theater group were still just kids when they named themselves after a fictional band from a Monty Python skit and recorded Pale. Unbeknownst to many who thought they were fresh-faced and mild-mannered\, Toad the Wet Sprocket had a grass roots DIY aesthetic\, refusing to be pushed around by their record label and insisting on doing things their own way – an independent spirit they still maintain to this day. \n“We were young\, and it was us against the record company\,” Todd recalls of the band’s early days. “We turned down big amounts of money to sign with Columbia so we could have creative control. But we were always fighting them. They wanted us to appear on Dick Clark New Year’s Rockin’ Eve and lip sync\, but we didn’t want to do that. We had a bit of a punk-rock ethos.” \nWith the release of their timeless Rings: The Acoustic Sessions\, and 2026 being the 40th Anniversary as a band\, Toad will be on the road throughout 2026 and the album\, that was shared with fans gradually over the last year and had a limited edition vinyl package that sold out in 10 minutes. With Rings: The Acoustic Sessions\, Toad delivers more than an ‘unplugged’ greatest hits collection; more than a remastered retrospective glazed over with nostalgia. Rather\, they’ve captured the concentrated power of their best hits and deep cuts as they exist in this moment\, performed by the band as they are today. \nEven with everything that’s changed over the last few decades\, one of the band’s main drivers has remained the same since they first started performing together in high school: bringing people together to experience music as a binding force and to help them feel like they belong. “If you’re feeling isolated and you need to gather yourself back to remember how much you love your life\, music is your friend\,” Glen says. “We want people who come to our shows to feel at home for a while.” \nToad the Wet Sprocket with Augustana \nAugust 11 at 7:30 pm

SUMMARY:Herbie Hancock – 2 Nights!
DESCRIPTION:Recommended if you like: Miles Davis\, John Coltrane\, Chick Corea\, Duke Ellington \nNow in the seventh decade of his professional life\, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: at the forefront of world culture\, technology\, business and music. Herbie Hancock has been an integral part of every popular music movement since the 1960’s. As a member of the Miles Davis Quintet that pioneered a groundbreaking sound in jazz\, he also developed new approaches on his own recordings\, followed by his work in the 70s — with record-breaking albums such as “Headhunters” — that combined electric jazz with funk and rock in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music. “Rockit” and “Future Shock” marked Hancock’s foray into electronic dance sounds; during the same period he also continued to work in an acoustic setting with V.S.O.P. \nHancock received an Academy Award for his Round Midnight film score and 14 Grammy Awards\, including Album Of The Year for “River: The Joni Letters\,” and two 2011 Grammy Awards for the globally collaborative CD\, “The Imagine Project.” \nHancock serves as Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and as Institute Chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. In 2011 Hancock was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador\, and in December of 2013\, received a Kennedy Center Honor. His memoir\, Herbie Hancock: Possibilities\, was published by Viking in 2014\, and in February 2016 he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. \nHappens on the following Dates:\nAug 11\, 2026\, 7:30pm to 10:30pm\nAug 12\, 2026\, 7:30pm to 10:30pm
