SUMMARY:AUG 11 – What Is Art\, Really? Lessons from East and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Tues\, Aug 11\, 6:00 – 7:00 PM \nDoors Open at 5:30 PM. \nAdmission $10 \nRefreshments and light snacks provided. \nWe often assume that “art” exists in every culture in the same way it does in ours — but does it? \nThis engaging presentation challenges that assumption. For a member of a nomadic tribe\, for example\, artistic expression may be woven into daily life rather than displayed on a wall\, so what does “making art” actually look like when your lifestyle allows for few possessions?\nIs art an integral part of being human\, or a culturally specific concept? How do form and function differ from what we assume in the Western world? \nDrawing on specific examples from East Africa and West Africa\, this presentation reveals how two regions of a vast and diverse continent approach artistic tradition in strikingly different ways. \nAudience participation\, thoughtful challenges\, and lively discussion are encouraged throughout. Expect to leave with a broadened perspective on what “art” really means! \nDr. Lydia Dambekalns holds a Ph.D. from Penn State University and spent 25 years as an Associate Professor of Art Education at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. A specialist in fiber arts\, she has presented and led workshops extensively at national and regional conferences throughout her career. \nDambekalns’ global perspective is rooted in firsthand experience: she served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Kenya during the 1980s and in Benin in the 2000s\, and has lived and worked across Africa\, Asia\, and Europe; including a Fulbright Fellowship in Latvia (2004–2005). \nThis presentation is offered in partnership with the Fort Collins International Center.

SUMMARY:Toad the Wet Sprocket\, with Augustana
DESCRIPTION:Any music fan who grew up in the ‘90s\, before the rise of streaming platforms\, will tell you that when a record store clerk made a music recommendation\, you took it seriously. Often\, well-studied music nerds\, these unsung tastemakers had their finger on the pulse of lesser-known\, excellent bands. So it speaks volumes that many of Toad the Wet Sprocket’s earliest champions were record store clerks who put the Santa Barbara quartet’s early albums into unsuspecting listeners’ hands\, convincing them to overlook their unusual band name and give them a shot\, perhaps comparing them to R.E.M. \nThese four friends who met in a high school theater group were still just kids when they named themselves after a fictional band from a Monty Python skit and recorded Pale. Unbeknownst to many who thought they were fresh-faced and mild-mannered\, Toad the Wet Sprocket had a grass roots DIY aesthetic\, refusing to be pushed around by their record label and insisting on doing things their own way – an independent spirit they still maintain to this day. \n“We were young\, and it was us against the record company\,” Todd recalls of the band’s early days. “We turned down big amounts of money to sign with Columbia so we could have creative control. But we were always fighting them. They wanted us to appear on Dick Clark New Year’s Rockin’ Eve and lip sync\, but we didn’t want to do that. We had a bit of a punk-rock ethos.” \nWith the release of their timeless Rings: The Acoustic Sessions\, and 2026 being the 40th Anniversary as a band\, Toad will be on the road throughout 2026 and the album\, that was shared with fans gradually over the last year and had a limited edition vinyl package that sold out in 10 minutes. With Rings: The Acoustic Sessions\, Toad delivers more than an ‘unplugged’ greatest hits collection; more than a remastered retrospective glazed over with nostalgia. Rather\, they’ve captured the concentrated power of their best hits and deep cuts as they exist in this moment\, performed by the band as they are today. \nEven with everything that’s changed over the last few decades\, one of the band’s main drivers has remained the same since they first started performing together in high school: bringing people together to experience music as a binding force and to help them feel like they belong. “If you’re feeling isolated and you need to gather yourself back to remember how much you love your life\, music is your friend\,” Glen says. “We want people who come to our shows to feel at home for a while.” \nToad the Wet Sprocket with Augustana \nAugust 11 at 7:30 pm

SUMMARY:Herbie Hancock – 2 Nights!
DESCRIPTION:Recommended if you like: Miles Davis\, John Coltrane\, Chick Corea\, Duke Ellington \nNow in the seventh decade of his professional life\, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: at the forefront of world culture\, technology\, business and music. Herbie Hancock has been an integral part of every popular music movement since the 1960’s. As a member of the Miles Davis Quintet that pioneered a groundbreaking sound in jazz\, he also developed new approaches on his own recordings\, followed by his work in the 70s — with record-breaking albums such as “Headhunters” — that combined electric jazz with funk and rock in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music. “Rockit” and “Future Shock” marked Hancock’s foray into electronic dance sounds; during the same period he also continued to work in an acoustic setting with V.S.O.P. \nHancock received an Academy Award for his Round Midnight film score and 14 Grammy Awards\, including Album Of The Year for “River: The Joni Letters\,” and two 2011 Grammy Awards for the globally collaborative CD\, “The Imagine Project.” \nHancock serves as Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and as Institute Chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. In 2011 Hancock was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador\, and in December of 2013\, received a Kennedy Center Honor. His memoir\, Herbie Hancock: Possibilities\, was published by Viking in 2014\, and in February 2016 he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. \nHappens on the following Dates:\nAug 11\, 2026\, 7:30pm to 10:30pm\nAug 12\, 2026\, 7:30pm to 10:30pm

SUMMARY:All Your Friends
DESCRIPTION:An indie dance party for the ones who still romanticize a scratched iPod\, American Spirits\, and a blurry night soundtracked by bloghouse and post-punk revival. All Your Friends is at HQ on 14 August 2026\, bringing the sweat\, synths\, and nostalgia of the early 2010’s house party. \nThis is your basement-floor flashback to tight jeans\, smudged eyeliner\, and nights that felt like a house show turned afterparty. Expect a high-energy dance floor fueled by indie sleaze classics and remixes you forgot you loved\, from LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture to Foals\, Yeah Yeah Yeahs\, TV on the Radio\, MGMT\, Crystal Castles\, and more. No frills\, just bodies in motion. \nWhether you never left the Lower East Side or just miss the chaos of that era\, All Your Friends is a night dedicated to bad decisions\, blown speakers\, and the soundtrack of your favorite forgotten memories. Come ready for the sweat\, the noise\, and the party your Tumblr warned you about at HQ.

SUMMARY:Yonder Mountain String Band
DESCRIPTION:Grammy-nominated Yonder Mountain String Band has never chased trends or followed a formula. For 27 years\, they’ve made music on their own terms\, shaping a sound and a legacy driven by instinct\, built on chemistry\, and rooted in something real. Their influence helped steer progressive bluegrass into new territory\, creating space for two of the most visible and enduring sub-genres in American roots music. Within their first few years\, they brought bluegrass to rock stages\, premier festivals\, and mainstream audiences\, expanding the reach of acoustic music in ways that still echo through a new generation of artists. \n2026 marks a significant moment for Yonder\, with two album releases that reflect both where they are now and the moments that shaped them. Early on comes Good As True (2026)\, their twelfth studio album\, recorded live in the studio and filled with all-new original songs that explore communication: the things we say\, the things we mean\, and everything that gets lost in between. The album moves across the range Yonder has always embraced\, from high-energy bluegrass to songs that lean toward folk\, rock\, and indie influences. Later\, they’ll mark the long-awaited 20th anniversary (two years overdue) and first vinyl pressing of Mountain Tracks\, Vol. 3 (2004)\, the third installment in their celebrated live series\, recorded in 2003 at their Kinfolk Celebration at Planet Bluegrass. The reissue captures a defining moment in Yonder’s rise and honors their deep connection to Colorado\, where their journey began and where they’ve since been inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame. \nNearly three decades in\, Yonder Mountain continues to unfold in real time on stage\, in song\, and in the shared moments that keep their music alive. \nYonder Mountain String Band\, with the Fretliners\nSaturday\, August 15 at 7:30 pm

SUMMARY:After Three Decades Together\, Denver Duo Perpetual Motion Releases Eighth Album\, Go With The Flow Free album pre-release concert August 15 at Vine Street Pub
DESCRIPTION:After Three Decades Together\, Denver Duo Perpetual Motion Releases Eighth Album\, Go With The Flow \nFree album pre-release concert August 15 at Vine Street Pub \nDENVER\, Colo. — After more than three decades of making music together\, Denver instrumental duo Perpetual Motion returns with Go With The Flow\, its eighth studio album. Shaped by seven years of performing\, teaching\, collaborating\, traveling\, and life’s unexpected turns\, the album reflects a musical journey that embraces change rather than resists it. \nThe duo will celebrate the release with a free pre-release concert on Saturday\, August 15\, at Vine Street Pub\, 1700 Vine Street in Denver. Music begins at 8 p.m. \nViolinist Josie Quick and guitarist Tom Carleno have spent more than 30 years creating original instrumental music that blends jazz\, folk\, world music\, and contemporary acoustic influences. During the seven years since their last studio release\, they continued performing throughout Colorado\, recording with other artists\, and allowing these new compositions to evolve naturally. Their recordings have earned honors from the Peace Song Awards\, Zone Music Reporter\, One World Music Awards\, Unisong International Song Contest\, and SongDoor International Songwriting Competition. \nGo With The Flow features eleven original compositions and two imaginative cover arrangements inspired by travel\, loss\, injury\, healing\, friendship\, and joy. Rather than following a single musical style\, the album embraces change\, weaving together diverse influences into a sound that is unmistakably Perpetual Motion. \nThe title track grew from an infectious groove and shifting time signatures that became a reminder to embrace life’s unexpected turns. Another composition\, “Water\, Light\, and Love\,” reflects on the simple elements that sustain life and our connection to the natural world. \nThe album also celebrates Colorado’s vibrant music community\, featuring percussionist Christian Teele\, cellist Hannah Alkire of Acoustic Eidolon\, bassist Blake Eberhard\, and cellist David Short. \n“These songs weren’t written to fit into a genre\,” says Quick. “They grew alongside everything else we were doing—performing\, collaborating\, teaching\, traveling\, and living life. There were challenges\, unexpected detours\, and moments of gratitude. Go With The Flow became the perfect title because that’s exactly what we do.” \nGo With The Flow will be released September 4\, exclusively on Bandcamp\, where listeners can purchase the album directly from the artists. \nEvent at a Glance \nWho: Perpetual Motion\nWhat: Go With The Flow Album Pre-Release Concert\nWhen: Saturday\, August 15\, 8:00 p.m.\nWhere: Vine Street Pub\, 1700 Vine Street\, Denver\nAdmission: Free\nAlbum Release: September 4 (Bandcamp exclusive) \nAbout Perpetual Motion \nPerpetual Motion is the Denver-based violin and guitar duo of Josie Quick and Tom Carleno. Known for inventive original compositions and imaginative reinterpretations of familiar songs\, they blend jazz\, folk\, world music\, and contemporary acoustic influences into an energetic\, genre-defying sound. For more than three decades\, they have performed throughout Colorado and beyond\, creating music that is melodic\, rhythmic\, and rooted in the joy of musical discovery. \nMedia Contact \nJosie Quick\nPerpetual Motion\n720-201-3234\njquick@ecentral.com\nwww.perpetual-motion.net \nHigh-resolution photos\, album artwork\, and review excerpts are available upon request. \nEarly Praise for Go With The Flow \n“Go With The Flow is as eclectic\, entertaining\, and vibrant as instrumental music can be… a standout example of world fusion instrumental music at its finest.”\n— Keith “MuzikMan” Hannaleck\, MuzikMan.net

SUMMARY:Tower of Power
DESCRIPTION:Tower of Power August 21 at 7:30 pm \nFor 58 years\, Tower of Power has delivered the best in funk and soul music. “We were a Soul band called The Motowns.” recalls Emilio Castillo. “Rocco was the bass player\, I was there\, and my brother was the drummer. I met “Doc” Kupka back in 1968\, and gave him an audition. He came in the band\, and we eventually changed our name to the Tower of Power.” The reason for the band name change was that they had a specific goal in mind.  \nEast Bay Grease defined their sound and landed them with Warner Brothers. Bump City\, their 1972 debut for the label\, was a hit on both the Billboard 200 and the R&B Albums chart\, and netted them the hits “You’re Still A Young Man” and “Down to The Nightclub.” The 70s were a boom period with radio classics like “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?\,” and the band continued to tour and record over the years. Castillo says their love of the stage is the same today as it was back in 1968. \n50 years later\, in 2018\, they returned to Oakland to celebrate their landmark 50th anniversary. Tower’s window-rattling grooves and raucous party spirit has been a balm for the soul throughout their half-century existence\, but the release of 50 Years of Funk & Soul: Live at the Fox Theater couldn’t have arrived at a better time. \nThe band has long since surpassed Castillo’s modest aspirations\, traveling the world\, enjoying hit singles on their own and backing legendary artists including Otis Redding\, Elton John\, Santana\, the Grateful Dead\, John Lee Hooker\, Aerosmith\, Bonnie Raitt\, and countless others. In the process they’ve defined an “Oakland soul” sound as instantly recognizable as those from Castillo’s hometown\, Detroit\, as well as inspirations like Memphis and Philadelphia.  \nThe future of Tower of Power is set out to be vigorous and dynamic\, and will prove to be just that for fans around the world starved for the band’s groove just the way Tower of Power likes it!
